Instagram posts can be indexed by Google only when three account conditions are all met
Instagram's Help Center allows search engines to index public posts only from accounts that are over 18, public and professional. YouTube says third-party AI training is off by default, and Reddit content reaches Google and OpenAI through Data API partnerships both sides announced.
Whether an Instagram post shows up on Google, or a YouTube video is used for AI training, is written in the platforms' own help pages and terms.
We opened 13 help pages, terms and announcements from six platforms on 2026-09-14 and collected what they say about search engines and AI training.
Finding 01
Instagram lets search engines index posts only from adult, public, professional accounts
However, we allow search engines to index photos and videos from public reels and posts that were uploaded or posted from January 1, 2020 onwards from accounts that meet all criteria listed below:
Your profile information, including your username, profile picture and bio information, may still appear in third party search engine results.
Finding 02
YouTube keeps third-party AI training switched off unless the creator turns it on
By default, the third-party training setting is turned off.
If they choose to, creators and rights holders can allow third-party companies that are building AI models to use their YouTube videos for AI model training.
Finding 03
Reddit content reaches Google and OpenAI through Data API agreements, not robots.txt
Dates are the announcement or revision dates stated in each document.
To enable these and other experiences, Google now has access to Reddit’s Data API, which delivers real-time, structured, unique content from their large and dynamic platform.
OpenAI will bring Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products, helping users discover and engage with Reddit communities.
Finding 04
Google may index an embedded YouTube video on your page as well as on YouTube
If your website embeds videos from third-party platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, or Facebook, Google may index the video both on your web page and on the third-party platform's equivalent page.
Only use DiscussionForumPosting markup to describe a user-generated post on a website.

So what should a brand change in its social accounts?
- On Instagram, check the three account conditions and the search engine setting in privacy settings.
- Embed YouTube videos on your own pages as well, so the video can be indexed in two places.
- Treat Reddit as an AI source reached through contracts rather than crawling, and keep the full original on your own site.
- Decide YouTube's third-party AI training setting as an account policy; it stays off unless turned on.
